Guidelines - Decision-making aids based on the best evidence available

For the individual doctor it is becoming increasingly difficult to extract the current "gold standard" from the vast range of scientific publications, congress presentations, reports, notices and even pseudo-scientific articles. What is more, assessment of the quality of scientific publications is becoming more and demanding without recourse to background information and specific technical knowledge of study theories and statistical models. In view of this, medical guidelines are intended to act as core evidence-based recommendations - an aid to decision-making in the endeavour to provide each individual patient with the best available treatment for their situation based on scientific evidence.
